About the Club

Carolina Coastal Railroaders (CCR) was founded in early 1992 when a group of men came together at the Country Kitchen Restaurant in New Bern to discuss the future of model railroading in the New Bern area. This group of people decided that it would be a great idea to form a railroad club for anybody interested in model railroading and railfanning.

Informal meetings were held and the name, Carolina Coastal Railroaders, was approved on October 15, 1992. At this time the CCR started with about 10-11 people attending meetings. The membership in August 2007 consisted of 33 full members, 1 associate member, and 3 junior members. Membership is projected to continue growing.

In March of 1993 the CCR rented space in a building and started construction of a permanent layout in HO scale. The club outgrew this location, and in 1998 leased a larger location and started construction of a larger HO model railroad based on railroading in North Carolina. In addition an N scale layout (loosely based on the Model Railroader magazine N scale layout plan: "Clinchfield Railroad") was started.  In March of 2006, we moved to our new facility on S. Glenburnie. A new track plan was designed for this space and work on the new layout has begun. Currently, the scenery is not be complete, but trains are running. The new layout features downtown New Bern complete with signature structures such as the Sudan Shriners' Temple, freight station, Elks' building and others.

The CCR has a HO Scale Modular Railroad that is taken to public displays such as the Chrysanthemum Festival in New Bern, NC, the March Annual Train Show that we sponsor, and the Kinston Arts Festival. One of our modules won third place prize at the 2005 Regional NMRA Convention is Raleigh, NC. The modules are financed and owned by the club.
